Are you passionate about packaging & Sustainability? Are you ready to manage Upfield Packaging Portfolio and help improve its environmental impact? We are looking for someone that can deploy the global packaging strategy across the Plant Cheese category, delivering a step in change!  You will oversee and manage the Plant Cheese packaging initiatives whilst ensuring packaging excellence across the extensive Supply Base, all which will significantly contribute to the overall success of the Global R&D function.

About the position 

The role requires you to incorporate the full end to end development of Upfield’s Plant Cheese packaging activities working closely with colleagues and relevant stakeholders.  It will also integrate the packaging development from Arivia (recently aquired by Upfield) with the Upfield Global Packaging Development. This role will inject passion and bring strong leadership to make a hugely positive impact to the way packaging delivers and innovates in the Plant Cheese Category to support both short and long-term business goals. You will be encouraged to bring new insights, approaches, and innovative technologies to the business to further strengthen the packaging function, given it is widely acknowledged at Board level that packaging is a critical strategic growth enabler for Upfield’s brand portfolio as well as the overall business. This role has no direct reports.

So what are the key objectives / projects you will deliver in the first year?

  • You will manage the agreed packaging projects which will devise and deliver the three to five-year packaging road map for the plant cheese category.   
  • Responsible for managing projects that will drive margin improvement whilst ensuring the ongoing compliance of the packaging portfolio globally.  
  • You will drive the optimization of our Plant Cheese packing portfolio.  
  • Responsible to integrate the Arivia Packaging specification in to the Upfield global Packaging specification system.
  • You will work in partnership with a wide range of internal partners; Marketing, Supply, Procurement, R&D and Quality along with key external partners globally, to effectively drive the packaging projects.   
  • Support the packaging director to identify trends and insights, source technology innovations, as well as maintain benchmarks versus industry peers, ensuring packaging outperformance in our plant cheese category.   

So what does it take to be successful in this role? 

Maybe you have worked in a similar role for the past 8 to 10 years working in Packaging or product development. Ideally you have a master’s degree in Mechanical engineering, material engineering, chemistry, product design, food engineering or any other related field. You are passionate about packaging materials & their mechanical characteristics. You are familiarized with the packaging process (fill seal, hot filling, cold filling, ascetics, retort, modified atmosphere and pasteurization). You have a strong understanding of the product development process, including management of key partners, design and engineering consultancies, toolmakers, and material converters.  You understand the consumer and brand, and you can balance these needs alongside the rational requirements of the commercial business and technical constraints of the manufacturing processes
