Our products are a great source of nourishment as part of healthy diet. Eating plant-based isn’t a fad, it’s a systematic change to the way people are choosing to eat. That’s why it’s important that we do what we can to ensure our plant-based products are accessible to everyone. We often fortify our products with essential micronutrients like vitamins A, B12 and D helping to tackle micronutrient deficiencies as well as ensure that we are supporting people to understand what consists of a nutritionally balanced diet.

Giving children a great start

Giving children a nutritious start to their day is an essential step towards healthier lives and better school performance. Blue Band contains both omega 3 and 6, and is fortified with vitamin A and we’re on a mission to make it readily available, affordable and desirable.

Our ambition is to ensure a nutritious breakfast is an everyday reality for 100 million school children across Africa and Asia.

Blue Band has created the Alliance for Good Breakfast – which brings together global experts, local NGOs, schools, parents and government agencies – to raise awareness and initiate behaviour change programmes.

As part of this work, Blue Band runs campaigns on the importance of a good breakfast to children in African and Asian schools.

Products with ‘Good fats’

The plant oils in Upfield’s products contain essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6. Our plant-based spreads are lower in saturated fats than their dairy counterparts, instead containing more “good fats” (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats).

Lowering “bad” cholesterol

Cholesterol is vital to help our bodies function, but too much cholesterol can be a problem for cardiovascular health. Phytosterols are naturally occurring molecules found in everyday plant-based foods like plant oils, nuts, seeds, grains and vegetables. They can partially block the uptake of dietary and biliary cholesterol from the gut, resulting in a reduction in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in the blood. It’s not possible to get enough phytosterols to have an effect by just eating these ingredients alone. That is why our products made with added phytosterols can help achieve the recommended dose to lower bad cholesterol in the blood. All that, and it tastes incredible too.

Making products affordable & accessible

We believe that plant-based products should be available to everyone, so we keep developing new ways of packaging our products so they are as affordable as possible. In Indonesia and Pakistan, we launched a low-priced pack of our Blue Band spread, in a smaller size and priced at the equivalent of €0.12. The spread is fortified with vitamins A, D, E, B1 and B2, plus omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. In Indonesia, the products are distributed through 249,000 stores, together with a multimedia campaign, they’ve reached 2.89m families. In Pakistan, distribution has hit 35,000 stores, and the TV, digital and outdoor campaigns reached 23m, allowing 240,000 families in Pakistan to enjoy more affordable and healthy plant-based food.

Food banks

We are proud to partner with food banks across the globe, enabling us to donate thousands of packs of plant-based spreads, creams and cheeses where we know they will make a difference.

Our donations have helped to keep people supplied with nutritious foods and to combat the food insecurity that is affecting more people than ever right now.

Since we started our product donation programme in 2020, we have given away more than 270 tonnes of product. And we’re not stopping there. Each week, we offer new goods to non-profit hunger relief organisations.
